SEMP accelerates energy efficiency in Albania
Albania’s Journey Towards Sustainable Energy Management
Energy-Efficient Street Lighting Inaugurated in Shkodër
SEMP project is making significant strides in advancing energy efficiency in Albania and introduces Energy Management Systems (EMS) based on the European Energy Award in four pilot municipalities: Berat, Korça, Përmet, and Shkodër. These systems help municipalities align with national energy regulations, enhance energy efficiency, and promote renewable energy in line with Albania’s energy and climate policy goals.
On October 21, 2024, Swiss Deputy Head of Mission Philipp Arnold inaugurated new energy-efficient street lighting in Shkodër, alongside Depyty Mayor Onid Bejleri. This initiative, supported by Switzerland through the SEMP project, replaces outdated high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) with energy-efficient LED lights across 7 kilometers of the city’s streets. The upgrade is expected to generate significant energy savings and reduce costs for the municipality. With an investment of approximately €0.6 million, the project underscores Shkodër’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure while prioritizing sustainability.
Institutional strengthening for sustainable energy management
SEMP not only focuses on infrastructure but also on building strong institutional frameworks for sustainable energy management. The project has facilitated the creation of Municipal Energy Management Units (MEMUs) in the pilot cities. These units are responsible for both executing specific energy projects and developing long-term Municipal Energy and Climate Plans (MECAPs). During his visit to Shkodër, Mr. Philipp Arnold met with MEMU members to discuss the impact of the project’s capacity-building efforts. Additionally, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, SEMP is working to develop national energy management legislation that will incentivize all Albanian municipalities to adopt professional and sustainable energy management practices.
